Cartoons

 My first professional art was as a cartoonist. I was mentored by the great Punch and Daily Mail cartoonist Leslie Illingworth and, by complete political contrast, Eccles (Frank Brown) of the Morning Star. My first published caricature was of poet WH Auden. I drew him from life when he came to give the TS Eliot lecture at the University of Kent in 1967. It appeared in The Times Literary Supplement.
